Former Washington high school basketball coach Gene Miiller ’75 was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash Award on Friday, September 12, 2025. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the governor for significant contributions to the state. Miiller, a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, received the award for his distinguished 50-year coaching career, during which he won three state championships.

Coach Miiller has received numerous awards over his career, including induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, Wabash College Hall of Fame, and The John Wooden Legacy Award.

Coach Miiller finished with a career record of 779-391. The last twenty years at the helm of the Hatchets he was 311-163, including three Class 3A state championships in 2008, 2010, and 2011.

While at Wabash, Miiller majored in mathematics and was a member of Phi Delta Theta.
