This summer, I had the privilege of shadowing Wabash alumnus, Dustin DeNeal, in his role as in-house counsel for First Internet Bank in Fisher, Indiana. This experience provided me with a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the day-to-day life of a lawyer in-house and the extensive work that goes into providing legal guidance to others. In this experience, I had the opportunity to assist Mr. DeNeal in various ways, which helped me further develop my professional skills and explore different applications of the legal field that I was not previously familiar with.
This experience aligns with my major and future employment goals after completing my time at Wabash, as I am a Political Science major preparing to attend law school after graduating from Wabash in the spring. Experiencing various aspects of daily life as a lawyer has confirmed that pursuing a career in law is what I wish to do after graduating, and it has also equipped me with valuable experience for applying to law schools. This experience also showed me how much I like dealing with challenges, trying to find solutions to problems, and helping others to find solutions to the challenges they encounter, which will motivate me going forward on my career path.
I would like to thank Mr. DeNeal for allowing me to work with him and for providing me with all the valuable insight and experience as part of this summer internship. I would also like to thank Professor Anderson and Wabash Democracy and Public Discourse for making this internship possible for me by providing funds that covered my summer expenses and travel to work. Without them, I would not have had this amazing opportunity to confirm my desire to become a lawyer.
