This summer I was fortunate enough to be a camp counselor at the Liberal Arts at Play summer camp. This camp was for high school kids who were interested in careers in sports. Being able to work this camp was a positive experience for me because I got to learn how to work with different personalities, as well as listen to some accomplished speakers who have careers in sports. This camp included trips to the NCAA Headquarters, the Indianapolis Colts practice facility, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and also a trip to the Indy 11 soccer game. I got to hear from alumni who work in various roles for different sports organizations. Some notable
speakers were Chris Carr, Steve Campbell, and Nate Bell. This camp was eye opening for me because I saw more of the business side of sports.
Through Chris Carr’s presentation I saw the mental health and the human aspect of playing sports. I learned that professional athletes still struggle with some of the same issues that other athletes do. For me, seeing the different routes that some of these speakers took to get to their profession was interesting. These speakers all had majors that were different, but still found a pathway to the career that they are now working in. I really appreciate the time that the speakers gave to the kids at the camp because they were able to inform the campers about the different ways that it is possible to follow your dreams in life. I want to give a thank you to the people who were involved in the camp, and who hired me to be a counselor. It was a very fast and fun week that was for the kids, but I still got a lot out of it and learned a ton
