In 2001, Gallup Inc., released the “CliftonStrengths” assessment to help individuals determine which of 34 distinguished strength areas are most prominent in their behavior. As of 2022, more than 26 million people worldwide had taken the assessment according to the Wall Street Journal. So… why had this assessment become the gold standard in the realm of talent determination in the workforce?
In the spring of 2024, during our participation in the Business Immersion Program (BIP), we embarked on the journey of self-discovery through the CliftonStrengths test. This widely adopted assessment had already reached over 26 million individuals globally by 2022, offering a comprehensive analysis of personal strengths based on survey responses across various domains.
Upon completing the assessment, each participant, including myself, received a detailed report outlining our top five strengths. This personalized insight became the foundation for our Strengths Folio presentations at the start of BIP, where we showcased our unique attributes to our peers. This experience was transformative, unveiling nuances of my colleagues’ personalities that had previously gone unnoticed. Unlike typical studies of historical figures or fictional characters, exploring and understanding my own strengths proved particularly enlightening.
As BIP progressed, the process of preparing and delivering these presentations enabled me to identify behavioral patterns that either amplified or hindered my strengths. This heightened self-awareness motivated me to actively mitigate my weaknesses while refining strategies to leverage my strengths more effectively. Moreover, the CliftonStrengths assessment facilitated connections beyond our immediate cohort, allowing me to engage meaningfully with alumni and business professionals who shared similar strengths. This common ground served as a catalyst for insightful conversations and expanded my professional network.
In essence, integrating the insights from the CliftonStrengths assessment into my personal development journey during BIP was profoundly enriching. It not only deepened my understanding of myself but also equipped me with practical tools to navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities in a professional setting. By fostering self-awareness and encouraging strategic self-improvement, this experience has undoubtedly contributed to my growth and readiness for future endeavors in the business world.
