Steele’s West Coast Widower Trip

After the death of Steele’s wife, he and his daughter Daisy went on a trip to the west coast. The trip was originally to visit Steele’s mother and brothers in Oregon and his youngest son Shirley and daughter-in-law in California. According to Steele’s grandson, “first, it was a family trip. Secondly, Steele felt he needed refreshment from what he had been doing here. He wanted to have a change in scenery.” Steele took another trip back to the West after he got back from his first trip and said that he predicted his painting from the trip would make “the best exhibition I have ever had.” Steele loved the West, but Steele could never love it more than Indiana.
