This is one of earliest paintings of poppies by J. Ottis Adams. This image depicts early spring in the gardens of his home called the Hermitage, in Brookville, Indiana. Adams was able to capture the beautiful Indiana landscape and the energy of life Spring brings to nature in his poppy paintings, making them very popular.
As a young man, Adams was interested in Indiana landscape. With the help of T.C. Steele and the rest of the Indiana group, Adams legitimized Indiana landscape paintings into the art community. Adams’ beautiful paintings awarded him credit as one of the favorite painters in the Society of Western Artists, a society that was helped established and eventually presided by Adams.
