Patterson’s Other Talents

As his fame in illustration grew, Patterson branched his skills outword, using his experience from studying architecture at McGill University and drawing interiors for department store circulars to design sets for plays both on and off Broadway. He took this experience and started to work in Hollywood for both Fox and Paramount studios, creating sets and costumes for characters. Patterson also created the New York Cartoonists Society with contemporaries and friends in the early 1950’s, serving as President from 1952-1953. Even after he stopped drawing due to arthritis in his 60’s, he continued to train young artists, allowing his vision of the “flapper” the vivacious, leggy woman to carry forth into a new generation.
