This summer, I have been working with Jake Jaworski and his company Garage Gym
Experiment on the yearly event they put together called HomeGymCon, which brings many large gym companies together and allows customers to network and try out newly released gym equipment. This experience taught me many valuable lessons and provided me with knowledge across various fields. Marketing was a big part of this internship. I was tasked with editing the website daily, ensuring that all information was accurate and that the website presented an appealing appearance to viewers. Additionally, my partner and I were tasked with sending a few hundred cold emails to gyms and retail stores about the event. By doing this, I learned some foundational sales knowledge and learned how to make more compelling cold emails. I was able to make a few sales from just cold emails, and feel that with a little more experience, I would feel more confident in a sales role.

Throughout the internship, Jake tasked me with coming up with daily reports tracking the website’s traffic and sales, and revenue from the website per day. I found this part of the internship to be very interesting and more enjoyable, which made me
consider possibly looking at a career in analytics. The week of the event was the only period of the internship when I was in person and not doing everything remotely. The days of setting up were longer days but I learned the most during them. Throughout those days, my task was to help make sure all the vendors at the event were content and didn’t need any extra help with their booths, and also to set up the entryway where the tickets and t-shirts were being sold. On the days of the event, my job was to check customers in and make sure that each customer signed a waiver before entering. When I was not doing that, I was putting together bags for athletes who were competing in the competitions at the event or talking to vendors and seeing if they had any issues. Working the event helped me build better networking and hospitality skills and taught me how to communicate effectively with a large number of people. Once we were done with the event, our next few tasks were done remotely. We helped Jake come up with a few new ideas for
the logo for next year’s event, and we helped design new sponsorship packages for next year as well. I feel this internship has helped me not only with technical skills but also with being a better communicator, which will help me in the future, as I’m interested in careers where communication and people skills are a huge part. I really want to thank Jake for teaching me
many valuable skills throughout this period.
