One of the summer internships I did was being an art camp mentor. It was under the Art Department, and Mrs. Ellenberger from Crawfordsville Highschool. Two other
students and I worked with two groups of elementary students, one morning class and one afternoon class. We worked with multiple mediums, paint, clay, metal, and more.
We learned about administrative tasks such as getting important medical information, getting students signed in and out, and making sure there was a registered pick-up list. Additionally, we made sure that the classes were focused and engaged, which could be challenging at times due to the age of the students. Our last task, and probably the greatest challenge of the internship, was putting together an art show at the end of the
week. The last class ended on Friday at 3 pm. The art show started on Friday at 5 pm. We handled this quick turnaround time by taking the students’ art during the week and setting up the art show as the students completed their work. This led to a couple of late nights in the art gallery, which was actually quite fun.
In total, we had 5 different art pieces from each student, there being almost 40 students. So, there were around 200
individual pieces of artwork we had to display. We also wanted to put together an impressive showcase of the student’s art, because these parents are used to elementary school art shows of the student’s artwork just put on lunch tables. We used
a laser level to make sure that every piece was at the correct height. We also used an “island” style to display three-dimensional pieces of art. The most satisfying part of this internship was having the students leading their parents around the gallery, showing off their artworks.
