I had heard that Uma liked the shawl, but when she came in to grab food during rehearsal she saw me and said, “I love an object that carries emotional weight onstage.” And I thought, That’s it. I’ve hit it!
PAUL HAESEMEYER ’21, recalling his conversation with actor Uma Thurman backstage at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Vermont, where Haesemeyer interned in the costume shop last summer. He had spent a week knitting a shawl for Thurman’s character in Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, using yarn the actor had chosen.
