We’ve received many reports this week of an email phishing scam that warns we are making “vital maintenance on our officiail web site” and asking you send your username and password to avoid having your account shut off. This is a scam intended to steal personal information, and you should simply delete the message.
For those new to the Wabash community, higher education institutions are a prime target for increasingly sophisticated email scams. This latest scam purports to come from “Technology Services Help Desk” and the College address and phone number is included in the message. These things are easy to fake, and do not indicate the message is from a legitimate source. Wabash IT Services will never ask for your password or other personal information via email. Even if a message appears to come from a valid Wabash College address, or from the Help Desk, or from a member of the Wabash IT Services staff, the message is still a scam, and you should simply delete it.
If you are ever unsure of the validity of a message, or if you have responded to this or similar scams, please contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@wabash.edu, 765.361.6400) for assistance. If you receive a message that you know is a scam, there is no reason to forward it; you can simply delete the message.
