<\/a>We lost Vic Powell today – October 6, 2011.\u00a0 We knew it was coming.\u00a0 As you can imagine, it wasn\u2019t Vic\u2019s mind and soul that gave way.\u00a0 It was simply time for him to join Brigance in the heavenly debate club.<\/p>\n
I often reflect that the people who have had a profound impact on my life are the ones who challenge me, through thought and action, to be more like them.\u00a0 To be better.\u00a0 To be more understanding.\u00a0 More compassionate.\u00a0 More committed. \u00a0More spiritual.\u00a0 More of everything.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s one thing to encourage another person to be good.\u00a0 It\u2019s another to be so good, in so many ways, that those around you get caught up in it\u2026feed off of it\u2026get stoked by it.<\/p>\n
Father Ted and Professor Vic \u2013 two such men.<\/p>\n
I took several classes at Wabash from Vic.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember any of them.\u00a0 No outlines, no tests, no assignments, no titles. \u00a0But those things just aren’t important. \u00a0I remember two things vividly.\u00a0 I remember standing up in front of my classmates and attempting to communicate.\u00a0 \u00a0And I remember Vic\u2019s presence and his ability to effortlessly do what he was trying to get us to do.\u00a0 Vic could certainly communicate\u2026in a magical way.\u00a0 What you always saw was a great delivery \u2013 an instant connection to those around him.\u00a0 What you had to look hard for was the intense research and preparation.<\/p>\n
I have often thought that when the inevitable happens, and Vic and Father Ted make that trip to heaven, that I would be lucky enough to somehow not know \u2013 maybe sleep through the day or something.\u00a0 Wake up and they\u2019re declared saints.\u00a0 Cowardly, I know.\u00a0 It\u2019s like avoiding a root canal or a checkride.<\/p>\n
Will there still be a special place called Wabash after Vic?\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Take comfort in the fact that there are about ten \u201cjunior Vics\u201d on campus.\u00a0 But you know\u2026it just won\u2019t be quite the same\u2026and it shouldn\u2019t be.<\/p>\n
Giants do roam the earth\u2026and we lost one today.<\/p>\n
