{"id":36,"date":"2006-11-10T15:27:52","date_gmt":"2006-11-10T15:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/technotes\/2006\/11\/10\/selective-screen-capture-on-a-mac\/"},"modified":"2006-11-10T15:27:52","modified_gmt":"2006-11-10T15:27:52","slug":"selective-screen-capture-on-a-mac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/technotes\/2006\/11\/10\/selective-screen-capture-on-a-mac\/","title":{"rendered":"Selective Screen Capture on a Mac"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-top: 0\"><i>Jeana Rogers, Media Support Specialist&nbsp;<\/i>&#8212; Ever wish you could capture just part of the screen on your Mac?&nbsp; Whether you are producing documentation and want to include some screen shots or testing various settings to get the best results from your desktop printer, here\u2019s a tip for capturing part of the screen.&nbsp; Press <b>Command Shift 4<\/b> on the keyboard.&nbsp; The cursor turns into a cross-hairs icon.&nbsp; Now you can click and drag the mouse over just the part of the screen you want to capture.&nbsp; When you let go of the mouse button you\u2019ll hear a snapshot sound. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This creates a picture file on your desktop called Picture 1, Picture 2, etc.&nbsp; One file for each snapshot you take.&nbsp; These files will open in Preview automatically but you can edit them in your preferred Photo software too.&nbsp; Print out important settings (NOT PASSWORDS) and save them, just in case.<\/p>\n<p>This is a good way to document custom settings on your Mac or capture part of a web page (don\u2019t steal other peoples work though!) or anything that comes up on your screen.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"389\" height=\"319\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/www2images\/otqcpxvq55716.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It can also be helpful when diagnosing problems.
