\"\"Last Saturday Linda and I went with the freshman international students<\/a> to Indianapolis. This is an annual trip we\u2019ve done four times now, the first couple of years when Linda worked with the international students in her role in the CAE office. We\u2019ve continued since then through our involvement in the community friends program.<\/p>\n

The day started with a picnic at director of international students David Clapp\u2019s house. We then walked around White River State Park for a bit before taking in the Indianapolis Indians game and post-game fireworks show.<\/p>\n

As a service organization, those of us in IT interact most frequently with students (and other faculty and staff) when they are having a problem or are trying to address some specific need. It\u2019s nice to step outside of that role for a day and get to know the students a bit on a more personal level. Not that they didn’t ask a tech question or two along the way!<\/p>\n

I also got a chance to observe how these freshman use technology, since many brought along iPods, camera cell phones, and digital cameras. As we loaded into vans in Crawfordsville, I expected to see some plug in the headphones and tune out the people around them. Throughout the day, though, I saw something quite different. When discussing favorite bands or genres of music, students would share their iPods to provide actual examples. When talking about home, some shared pictures from their digital cameras. Instead of isolating themselves, they used technology to make connections that otherwise would have been difficult or impossible.<\/p>\n

All in all it was a great day, and I look forward to next year\u2019s trip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
