Years ago, Rod Helderman, Wabash Systems Maintenance Technician, collected old CDs from other IT staff (mostly AOL start-up disks, as I recall!) and kept them stacked up in his office because he knew there had to be a better option than simply throwing them in the trash. Well, Rod was right, and he brought the solution to Wabash – GreenDisk Technotrash Cans.
Now, Wabash IT Services contracts with GreenDisk to offer the entire Wabash community an easy and convenient way to recycle obsolete, broken, or unneeded technology products. Use it to dispose of:
- Electronic media and their cases: diskettes, zip disks, CDs, DVD, video cassette, etc
- Thumb drives, hard drives, zip drives
- Printer cartridges (inkjet or laser)
- Cell phones, pagers, PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, handheld games, and their chargers and cables
- All rechargeable batteries (though not regular alkaline batteries)
- Laptop computers
To take advantage of this service, simply bring your stuff to the basement of Baxter Hall and put it in the Technotrash trash can, located near Baxter 26.
The items we collect are returned to GreenDisk, who securely destroys any information on disks or media, recycles the items, and reports back to us to confirm that things were in fact recycled. The service is completely free to you — IT Services covers all shipping costs and GreenDisk fees.
Each year, the technology waste stream includes millions of used cell phones, dead batteries, and empty ink cartridges. Now it’s easy to do your part to protect the environment from harmful materials found in many of these products. Bring your junk to the Technotrash Can today.

Will you accept an occasional item from home?
Absolutely. We’ll take items for recycling from the office or home.
this is a great service. It looks like you don’t take desktop computers? If you do are the hard drives inside the PC destroyed as well?
