We announced a few weeks ago that we’ll do a major upgrade and expansion of the wireless network this summer. Upon completion in early August, we’ll provide full wireless coverage to all campus buildings, including fraternities and dormitories, as well as several outdoor spaces. In addition, the quality and performance of the current wireless network will be upgraded, offering 54Mbps coverage, rather than the current 11Mbps.

We’ve been planning the upgrade for several months now, and have select Cisco as our hardware vendor, and Berbee Information Networks to design and install the network.

Work will get underway in earnest on May 7, when engineers from Berbee will be on site to begin a campus-wide wireless site survey. The survey will take several weeks to complete, and will involve Berbee going to each building on campus, temporarily placing access points, and measuring signal strength to determine the optimal configuration.

You can help make the site survey as effective as possible by keeping dorm and fraternity rooms, offices, labs, and classrooms free of clutter and accessible to the Berbee engineers. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, whether now or after the site survey begins, please call the Help Desk for more information.
