Day 5 of our week-long look at digital photography (see overview story here) provides tips for taking great digital pictures.
It’s nice to print pictures, but one of the real advantages of digital photography over film is that it is really easy to share pictures with others. There are lots of free and low-cost ways to share your pictures. For an example of an online photo gallery, take a look at this album from Disney World I took last fall.
Email
If you want to send someone a couple of pictures, email remains a viable option. Keep in mind though that the file size of your pictures can be quite large (2Mb for a 4-megapixel camera), so you may run into trouble if you try to send more than a few pictures unless you scale them down to a smaller size.
Wabash Photo Albums
For pictures of Wabash events and activities, you can use display your pictures using Wabash’s web photo album. For an example, see the photo album from the Wabash College Theater Production of “Sideman”. For help on setting up a web photo album, contact the Help Desk, or Howard Hewitt in the public affairs office.
Sharing Pictures on Photo Printing Sites
Most of web sites that let you upload and print pictures also have tools for sharing your photos. You can share albums with Snapfish, but only people with a Snapfish account (or people willing to create a Snapfish account) can see your photos. Kodak EasyShare Gallery is similar, but you have the option when you share the album of requiring that people log in to view your pictures, or not, which makes this service a little more flexible.
iPhoto
iPhoto has tools to share your photos in a variety of ways, including integration with iWeb to upload a photo album to a .Mac web site. Learn more here.
Photo Sharing Sites
Two great things came out of Google’s purchase of Picasa in 2004. First, Google immediately began giving away the product for free. Second, Google now offers an on-line photo sharing service called Picasa Web Albums. You can upload albums directly from within Picasa, or through the picasaweb.google.com site itself. Albums can be public, or “unlisted” (albums you share with selected people). Click the links below for more information on Picase Web Albums.

Flickr (owned by Yahoo!) bills itself as “almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world.” Basic accounts are free, and have a 100Mb upload-limit per month. Pro accounts are $24.95 per year, with no upload limit, plus other benefits. Flickr has some innovative features, including the ability for people to comment on your photos. Check the links below for more information.
