IT Services Help Desk Specialist Monica Brainard met with a local Brownies troop this week to talk about computers and Internet safety. Below is Monica’s report from the troop meeting.
Monica Brainard — Computer Smarts: a Brownie Girl Scout Badge. That is one badge that a local Brownie troop is earning, and I can tell you that they truly deserve it!!!
I was honored to be invited to speak to a wonderful group of Brownies at Hose Elementary School this past Monday. I was asked to give a presentation focused on educating 6-8 year old girls on the How-to’s and Safety Issues regarding computers.
The girls were very intelligent, so I was not surprised at all when they recognized such things as a laptop, a mouse, a printer, etc. I was impressed that one of them knew what Information Technology was; sure enough, Emma’s daddy works in the ITS department here at Wabash College! One little gentleman (honorary brownie) stated that the WWW was the ultimate place for information. Have no fear, I informed him that his mother is the ultimate provider of information; he may email her using the Internet if he wants a second opinion! Then onto passwords…well, that stirred up some interesting conversation! Yes, we all know Mrs. Amidon’s password now! Chris, you may want to change that *hint, hint see Brad’s previous posting on Creating Strong Passwords. As Trey said, "You don’t want your friends to get called in for questioning!"
Thanks again to Lana for inviting me; I had a great time with you and your Brownie Troop, Monica =)
