Teaching Tips: 4 tips to help students learn from their mistakes

In a recent post on Chronicle’s Vitae site, David Gooblar offered four tips to help students make use of an opportunity to improve their learning in exams and assignments. Three of these suggestions focused on exams (strategies to follow up on an exam, or to break an exam into two parts, one of which is individual and the other of which is a group assignment).  The fourth focused on drafting for paper assignments, and seemed similar to other discussions that we have had on campus (in the context of improving writing, but also in our conversations about how to help students avoid using a source inappropriately).

With the start of classes approaching, I thought that this piece may be useful as we finalize our syllabi. And if you are interested in using any of these tips, I would encourage you to think now about how to build in one or more of them to your plan for the semester!
