This internship combined day to day work in a growing and thriving food pantry and shadowing experiences with
Dr. Nace, who works in the Eskenazi clinic connected to the food pantry.

Working at a food pantry might seem simple, but the other interns and I were taught how multifaced running a food pantry is, ranging from recruiting volunteers, organizing food deliveries and pickups, and working with the government to secure grants and report donations. Furthermore, after we became well versed in how the food pantry operated, we were often placed in charge of certain areas such as the car line, indoor and outdoor volunteers, and deliveries. Individually, my project for the summer was to log all donations and deliveries to the food pantry and report them to
the government. This is important as a key part of our food pantry are the donations we receive from stores like Costco and Walmart, and this reporting allows them to receive tax exemptions, encouraging them to donate more in the future. All these tasks and assignments allowed me to grow in my managerial and problem-solving skills because every day would have its own unique problem or challenge to overcome.

Shadowing Dr. Nace was very interesting and impactful. The clinic in which she works (and also runs) is often times free of charge or reduced in price for patients, meaning that many of the patients we saw were from disadvantaged areas and backgrounds in Indianapolis. In addition, many were Spanish-speaking, which was fun for me as I got to practice and enhance my Spanish abilities. In all, I was exposed to the financial and medical situations of many people in Indianapolis, and it
opened my eyes to how important Public Health is not only at the national level, but in the state of Indiana and its local governments.

This internship provided eye-opening opportunities and a chance to develop many important skills that I will use for the rest of my life. I am glad to have been a part of the CCFP family.

This summer I worked at the Crooked Creek Food Pantry in Indianapolis.
