When I decided that I wanted to spend my summer working, I knew I wanted it to be somewhere that I could not only gain exceptional exposure to career paths of my interest, but also a place where I knew I could be valued and impactful. It is for these reasons that I chose to get connected with the WGMC. Throughout the past few months, I have had the pleasure of working alongside the members of the Public Health Liaison Program (PHLP) where we have shared a common goal of providing a wide range of equitable health care to members of the community regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. While working with the PHLP, I have spent a lot of time doing outreach work where I have gone out into the community and attempted to connect individuals with healthcare services, but also to deliver general resources for healthy living practices. We have done many events where we have gone to shelters and community centers and given away food, water, and hygiene products that promote healthy practices. Also, with the PHLP I have drafted multiple resource guides and booklets that contain information on how to live a healthy lifestyle that we give away to clients who are in need. In addition to this, I logged ~135 hours in the medical clinic where I worked alongside doctors and nurses from varying specialties. This was also an exceptional experience because I not only obtained exposure to clinical operations, but I was also able to witness how medical professionals interact with patients and the methods they use to treat and improve patients’ health.

Throughout these experiences I was able to develop valuable skills in communicating with clients and patients from varying backgrounds, practice emotional intelligence and empathy, and obtain my first glimpse into what a career in healthcare would really look like. Finally, I want to express my extreme gratitude for this opportunity as I believe that it solidified my belief
that I want to pursue a future in medicine and hold a position where I can work to improve the general well-being of others

This past summer I have had the great privilege of interning at the Will Grundy Medical Clinic (WGMC) in Joliet, IL.
