This summer, I was given the opportunity to intern at the Gennesaret Free Clinic (GFC) in Downtown Indianapolis. During my time at Gennesaret, I was able to dive into various aspects of their organization. This experience allowed me to serve as a clerk, shadow Doctors and Nurse Practioners, attend community outreach events and meetings, and scan patient files into the electronic medical system (EMR). What makes Gennesaret unique is its mission as a non-profit organization providing free health care to the uninsured and underserved. This internship gave me insight of how a non-profit health clinic operates and sustains its impact in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of my time at Gennesaret was spent clerking at either mobile or stationary clinics. As a clerk, I gathered patient information and inputted them into the EMR system and coordinated with the staff to schedule follow-up appointments when needed. One of the biggest takeaways I gained from this experience was during clerkship. I was able to see and interact with different communities throughout Indianapolis. As an aspiring healthcare worker, this reminded me that it\u2019s important to treat every patient the same, no matter their socioeconomic background, race, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n

Another takeaway I gained from this experience was learning about the provider shortage. Since Gennesaret is a non-profit, it doesn\u2019t have the funds to hire a full-time doctor. Result? They rely on volunteer Physicians who can take the time out of their day to serve. However, doctors are burnt out and stressed, which forces the stationary clinics to close when a provider is unavailable. This leads to an inconsistent schedule of the clinic and patients that need serious help to be unseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This experienced continued to strengthen my long-term goal of being a healthcare worker. I would highly recommend any future Wabash Men aspiring to work in the healthcare field with this internship because of the valuable insights you\u2019re exposed to firsthand when out in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
