What I learned about myself from this internship is that I feel very proud of myself and I get a sense of accomplishment when I learn how to use new software or machines. In the beginning of my internship we had to draw up simple designs through CAD software. I had never heard of, nor used any CAD software previously so I was starting from scratch. It took me almost a full week to draw my first simple design. But as I kept on using the software and getting better at it, I got to the point to where I could draw up a design successfully on my first attempt in about 10 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I learned so much through this internship, such as CAD software, how to use laser etching machines, plasma machines, syringe pumps, etc. Through this 8-week internship, I have gained enough experience in knowledge that I qualify to be a microfluids lab assistant. I loved learning about microfluids. In the case of our experiments, my partner and I were some of the first people on the planet to experiment with cobalt, nickel, and iron in the microfluidic channels. So, we were pretty much given free reign to find something new about microfluidic channels. My supervisor, Dr. Tompkins, let us have control of what we were doing in lab.
Especially in the last week, he basically told us to do whatever we wanted with microfluids, something that interested us. He allowed us to use the lab in whatever way our hearts desired. I chose to further the experiments with iron to see the greatest potential difference I could generate within my device.<\/p>\n\n\n

I want to give a huge thank you to both Dr. Tompkins for giving my partner and I the opportunity to work under him, as well as <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Randy Rippy, who funded my research. Without these two gentleman, I would never have been given this amazing chance to learn and do research in my field of interest. So, I cannot thank them enough for giving me a chance to let my inner scientist run wild. Thank you to both of you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
