This internship was put together by the Wabash Global Health Initiative and organized by Gleaners’ director of community collaborations Mary Dubinin. I would like to thank all the people who made this internship possible including Jill Rogers, Mary Dubinin, Richard Gordon, Sarah Estell, Lindsey Riddick, and all of the kind men and women who work at Gleaners. I would also like to thank Chester Bryant, the volunteer manager for the Gennesaret Free Clinic, for allowing me to help work in the clinic during my time at Gleaners. Finally, I would like to thank the Wabash College and the community of donors for making this all possible.

Throughout my time at Gleaners, my first job was a GIS mapping project. In this project, I made maps of where Gleaners partner pantries were located in different counties while layering different information on these maps, such as poverty rates of different zip codes. I was able to present my work to members of the Gleaners team, and they are currently using this work to decide where they can open new pantries that will provide access to the most people. Another task I did was working on a survey that will help Gleaners figure out what resources people want to see provided in the new resource center they are building. This mostly entailed distributing the survey to neighbors and scrubbing the data that would be presented at a board meeting. Finally, while working in the Gennesaret clinic, I was able to gain valuable shadow experience while also gaining many clinical hours that helped me understand the wide world of medicine more strongly.

This experience was incredibly valuable to me as someone looking to go to medical school. I got to learn so much about food insecurity and the many ways that it affects people’s lives. This is very important to my future because many people do not think about how hunger and medicine go together. Many people make a decision every day to put a meal on the table or buy medication that they or a loved one needs. This internship was also very eye opening for me to see a whole different world of medicine. I interned at the Texas Medical Center last summer, so it was very interesting to see the differences between how hospitals function versus how free clinics function.

Thank you again to everyone who made this internship possible as I once again feel reaffirmed that I am making the right choice in my career path.

This summer, I was given the opportunity to intern at Gleaners Food Bank and their partner Gennesaret Free Clinic.
