I spent this past summer at the Legal Aid Society in Louisville, Kentucky on the Jeffrey A. Been Legal Aid Internship that Wabash has sponsored the past several years. Throughout the course of this eight-week internship, I gained valuable experience both for my future career plans as an attorney and more generally as a person. Pertaining to my long-term goals, this internship gave me the opportunity to experience the legal field in action as I accompanied attorneys to court and other areas that fell within their practice. The Legal Aid Society provides free legal access to those in the nation\u2019s lowest income brackets and could otherwise not afford the legal assistance they need for various issues in their lives. I went to housing court at the Louisville Hall of Justice where Legal Aid helps clients avoid unfair evictions, listened to a telephonic hearing concerning government benefits eligibility, and accompanied an attorney to a homeless shelter where Legal Aid provides legal advice and assistance to those who need it. In addition, I lived with former Legal Aid director and Wabash alum Jeff Been and his husband Eric at their home in Louisville. As former attorneys themselves, Jeff and Eric provided a great living environment for my experience as well as great insight into the legal field. attorney, I assisted Legal Aid\u2019s development team with their work on funding and broadening the scope of the service. This gave me a great opportunity to see how this side of a law firm and nonprofit operates. Some of my day-to-day tasks within this role included researching grants and nonprofits to connect Legal Aid with, delivering brochures to various local government buildings and nonprofits in the Kentucky counties that Legal Aid serves, and attending office workshops on the various services that<\/p>\n\n\n\n
