H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">owever, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hanks to the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gracious <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">support<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of Wabash Professor Yao Li, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as well as to the diligence of the WLAIP staff, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I have been able to receive a hybrid experience this Summer that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">imitates <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">well <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the benefits of immersive learning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Professor Li and I meet twice each week: in-person on Mondays, and virtually on Thursdays. During our Monday meeting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we sit down to review<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> weekly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-assigned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> episode from a TV Tokyo program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for its contextualized and colloquial content. I prepare for each of these meetings by learning a new set of vocabulary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> words<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, phrases, and sentence structures provided by Professor Li, who then analyzes and explains their meaning <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and usage <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as they come up in real conversations. During our Thursday meetings over Skype<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">we continue last semester\u2019s work progressing through exercises in the class textbook.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> For these meetings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I prepare by reviewing essential <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">points of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">grammar and formulaic sentence structures.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">my <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prepar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for these meetings, I am also being held accountable for extensive writing practice. Since most of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Japanese <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">language <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is written with them, this means that I spend a significant portion of my time learning new Chinese characters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kanji.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">For this purpose, I have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">written <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about 400 flash cards <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">so far <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this Summer. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My writing practice also includes completing the workbook packets that accompany each chapter of the class textbook.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By combining authentic conversation with the fundamentals, my language-learning regiment has enabled me to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> many<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> nuance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s that make <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Japanese <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a particularly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">difficult<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> language<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> learn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a highly contextualized language, Japanese requires this <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">double <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on the part of students serious about mastering it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hat\u2019s not all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> coming to see with greater clarity the differences between textbook and spoken Japanese, I have become a more confident <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">user <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the language.
