Andrew Freck ’21 — <\/em>As my bus pulled up to the manor which\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>serve as my home for the next five weeks, I couldn\u2019t help but be awestruck. This summer I was lucky enough to participate in a program at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, a small town situated about 2.5 hours north of London. Not your \u2018run-of-the-mill\u2019 internship, I was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>fortunate<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the opportunity to study in a different country for an entire month, while still under the supervision and instruction of Wabash College faculty. While at Harlaxton, I<\/span><\/span>\u00a0participated in, and received credit for,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0biology class taught by Wabash professor Dr. Anne Bost. As a student in BIO199: Viruses and Public Health, I learned about the life cycle of viruses, as well as their other biological\u00a0<\/span><\/span>implications<\/span><\/span>, through a multidisciplinary lens. For instance, as we discussed on our first day in class,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/span>health<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>, even as defined by the World Health Organization, has meaning well beyond medical science. When considering the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0which is characteristic of a \u2018healthy\u2019 individual, for example,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it is clear that knowledge<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of other fields like economics or philosophy is also necessary. Thanks to BIO199<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was able to gain a better understanding of the challenges facing our world, as well as<\/span><\/span>\u00a0more specific insight into how viruses spread and are treated. Along with this, I also had the opportunity to travel to many other countries through excursions provided by Harlaxton. These excursions allowed\u00a0<\/span><\/span>our biology<\/span><\/span>\u00a0class to step beyond the classroom, applying what we studied and seeing many of the historical places and artifacts about which we learned.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>For example, my class and I had<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the opportunity to take a field trip into London to see the model of DNA built by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Nobel-winning scientists James Watson and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Francis<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Crick.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I would like to thank Dr. Anne Bost for all the work she put into\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ensuring that<\/span><\/span>\u00a0this summer course\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was not only interesting and informative, but also thought-provoking, and for always pushing her students to think\u00a0<\/span><\/span>about the real-world implications of what is discussed in the classroom.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I would also like to thank the Dill Fund for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>making this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity possible and for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>helping me\u00a0f<\/span><\/span>urther my education.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I truly believe that t<\/span><\/span>he cornerstone of Wabash College is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>its<\/span><\/span>\u00a0network of generous, caring, and knowledgeable professors and alumni which<\/span><\/span>\u00a0never\u00a0<\/span><\/span>cease in working to provide\u00a0<\/span><\/span>fantastic\u00a0<\/span><\/span>learning opportunities, like the one I had the pleasure of participating in, for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>its\u00a0<\/span><\/span>current students.
