{"id":1796,"date":"2019-07-29T18:36:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T18:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/summerinternships\/?p=1796"},"modified":"2019-11-05T20:58:30","modified_gmt":"2019-11-05T20:58:30","slug":"haesemeyer-21-gains-valuable-experience-in-costume-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/summerinternships\/2019\/07\/29\/haesemeyer-21-gains-valuable-experience-in-costume-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Haesemeyer &#8217;21 Gains Valuable Experience In Costume Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1797\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1797\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/summerinternships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-07-29-at-2.32.14-PM.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1797 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/summerinternships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-07-29-at-2.32.14-PM-230x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/summerinternships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-07-29-at-2.32.14-PM-230x300.png 230w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/summerinternships\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/07\/Screen-Shot-2019-07-29-at-2.32.14-PM.png 672w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Haesemeyer &#8217;21<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Paul Haesemeyer &#8217;21 &#8212; <\/em>As I sit writing this, I have started my third week as a Costume Tech Intern at the Williamstown Theatre Festival at Williams College, amidst the pines of the Berkshire Mountains.\u00a0 I would not be working here if it was not for the generosity of the Dill Fund.\u00a0 Thank you for supporting an aspiring costume designer!<\/p>\n<p>First, you (the reader) are probably wondering what a Costume Tech Intern does.\u00a0 Essentially, I alter and build costumes for WTF\u2019s summer season.\u00a0 This season, WTF is producing seven shows\u2014five of which are world premieres\u2014, as well as intern and fellowship productions.\u00a0 Lorraine Hansberry\u2019s\u00a0<i>A Raisin in the Sun\u00a0<\/i>is currently in tech and opens later this week.\u00a0\u00a0<i>A Human Being of a\u00a0<\/i><i>Sort<\/i>\u00a0by Jonathan Payne, starring Andr\u00e9\u00a0Braugher\u00a0(<i>Brooklyn 99<\/i>) runs June 26th\u00a0\u2013 July 7th.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<i>Grand<\/i><i>\u00a0Horizons<\/i>\u00a0by Bess Wohl, stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson (<i>Modern Family<\/i>) opens\u00a0July 17th,\u00a0<i>Selling Kabul<\/i>\u00a0opens July 10th,\u00a0<i>Tell Me I\u2019m Not Crazy\u00a0<\/i>opens July 24th, and\u00a0<i>Ghosts<\/i>\u00a0by Henrik Ibsen starring Uma Thurman (<i>Pulp Fiction<\/i>) runs July 31-August 18th.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0<i>Raisin<\/i>, I have altered\u00a0many\u00a0shorts, pants, and cuffs,\u00a0ensuring that the costumes fit the actor correctly.\u00a0 And some are to make the costume fit poorly: one pair of pants I altered was to let out the waistband; the pants fit the actor too well!\u00a0\u00a0Essentially, I am an unpaid\u00a0stitcher\u00a0(alters and builds costumes); there are three other\u00a0stitchers, and one first-hand in the shop.\u00a0 There are nine costume design interns and two wig-and-makeup interns who help us as needed.\u00a0 There are twelve interns total; twenty-six people work together at any given time.\u00a0 They include shop management, assistant designers, a wardrobe supervisor, a craft supervisor, and a wig-and-makeup supervisor.\u00a0 Working ten-hours a day, six days a week provides a pressure cooker guaranteed to produce close friendships.\u00a0 Many of us felt like we had known each far longer than the first week.\u00a0 Living on the same floor with the other interns also strengthens these friendships.<\/p>\n<p>As a technician, I do not have as many design opportunities as the costume design interns do.\u00a0 Thankfully, during an interview with one of my supervisors, she asked if I was interested in designing at all.
