My Summer in Athens\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gage Ulery \u201918 \u2014 Wabash College and\u00a0the Rudolph Family have\u00a0provided me with an\u00a0experience\u00a0that I will\u00a0be forever\u00a0grateful for. I was given the opportunity to expand my education, not only in different parts of the country, but in the beautiful\u00a0city of Athens. I\u00a0was able to\u00a0do this because of the generous acts of the\u00a0Rudolph family\u2019s\u00a0summer\u00a0study\u00a0abroad scholarship.<\/p>\n

My summer was filled with plenty of ferry rides, tastings of new and delicious food, while\u00a0meeting some great,\u00a0new friends,\u00a0and enjoying the beautiful, warm weather Greece had\u00a0to offer. While I was abroad, I studied\u00a0\u2018Sustainability Across Time and Spatial Scale in Greece and\u00a0Urban Islands\u2019\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018The Anthropology of Food: The\u00a0Mediterranean Diet.\u2019<\/p>\n

One of my favorite activities while in Greece was walking around the city.\u00a0\u00a0With the Acropolis\u00a0being\u00a0only a five-minute walk, I made several trips to\u00a0awe in the architecture\u00a0crafted by the early\u00a0Greeks. The National Garden, which was\u00a0right across from the Presidents House,\u00a0was a great place to exercise and gaze at the beautiful trees, which\u00a0provided much needed shade from the hot sun. Museums,\u00a0such as The Acropolis Museum and the Athens War Museum,\u00a0provided\u00a0us with plenty of new information and pictures\u00a0about Greece\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sustainability Across Time\u2019\u00a0allowed me to visit some of the most beautiful\u00a0islands in the world and gave\u00a0me\u00a0time\u00a0to take in the\u00a0beauty of the ocean. Hydra and Santorini, two of the most popular islands off the coast, had an\u00a0amazing view that\u00a0cannot be forgotten.\u00a0\u00a0One of my favorite events from the\u00a0\u2018Mediterranean Diet\u2019 class was when we toured\u00a0to a private fish market. The class was introduced to the owner,\u00a0George,\u00a0and he gave us a full\u00a0rundown of\u00a0the\u00a0fresh\u00a0fish he catches\u00a0every day\u00a0for the shop. George let us smell his odorless\u00a0fish so we can compare\u00a0his fish to the other fish markets we have visited.\u00a0 The workers would bring\u00a0in these huge creatures\u00a0and put them on display until the buyer came and picked them up. One of the fish\u00a0that was brought out\u00a0on display\u00a0was a Libyan Swordfish.\u00a0 George asked me, \u201cCan you lift 120lbs?\u201d I responded, \u201c120lbs? Absolutely!\u201d\u00a0 I was lucky enough to\u00a0attempt to\u00a0hold\u00a0the fish that\u00a0weighed every bit of 120lbs.\u00a0\u00a0After putting the\u00a0fish back on the ice, I was covered with\u00a0fish juices, and was given a company shirt by the owner himself.<\/p>\n

Athens opened my eyes to the vast diversity in this world. I became friends with Americans, Greeks, Albanians, Australians, Germans and Syrians all because of this\u00a0amazing\u00a0opportunity. Studying abroad in Greece not only allowed me to meet people,\u00a0it also allowed me to grow as a man. I joined a group of people who believed in completely different subjects such as politics, religion, and education as me. From there,\u00a0I learned to be more understanding of others and more respectful of each of their ideas. I also learned how to\u00a0\u201cfend\u201d for my own\u00a0and more independent. I would make frequent\u00a0trips to the grocery store in the hopes of recreating the delicious meals we would eat from the night\u00a0before. I am and will always be forever grateful of the Rudolph Family and\u00a0Wabash College. Thank you for this great opportunity!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
