{"id":5047,"date":"2020-01-12T17:33:53","date_gmt":"2020-01-12T17:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/?p=5047"},"modified":"2023-05-24T17:56:12","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T17:56:12","slug":"capitalize-on-the-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/2020\/01\/12\/capitalize-on-the-moment\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Capitalize on the Moment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CAPITALIZE ON THE MOMENT\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s been behind the camera, directed his own films, helped others make theirs, learned real-world techniques of film production from the pros, worked on videos for the College, and last summer he interned with art professors Matt Weedman and Annie Strader in a digital art project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The life lesson Austin Yeomans \u201920 learned from his minor in film and digital media: \u201cCapitalize on the moment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the things I enjoy about doing video work is that I\u2019m the guy with the camera\u2014I record and edit moments so that people will have those memories for posterity. I get to capture a moment and suspend it in time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Strader and Weedman he was suspending time\u2014and objects\u2014in ice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019d put these things in water, put them in the freezer over the weekend, then come back and chip away and take pictures of it. We got some amazing images, but ice at room temperature is such a fleeting material, you have to capitalize on the moment that\u2019s there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeomans learned that seizing the evanescent requires collaboration, critique, and a little help from friends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn class we workshop our ideas, and those critiques help you articulate your idea better, figure out why you\u2019re doing it, and how to do it. In this work, you need more than two hands to make most anything worthwhile happen in a reasonable amount of time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another lesson of his work in film and digital media minor applies to almost any discipline, any project. After all the planning, Yeomans says, you still have to be prepared for the unexpected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to keep going, even if you\u2019re not sure what you\u2019re doing right then; you\u2019ve got to be okay with a little uncertainty and keep discovering. That determination is more important than having everything planned out.
