{"id":3315,"date":"2017-01-09T15:13:27","date_gmt":"2017-01-09T15:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/?p=3315"},"modified":"2023-05-24T17:56:31","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T17:56:31","slug":"traveling-well-enamored-of-the-flower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/2017\/01\/09\/traveling-well-enamored-of-the-flower\/","title":{"rendered":"Traveling Well: &#8220;Enamored of the Flower&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After our photoshoot with Ken Ogorek \u201987 and Professor Raymond Williams H\u201968 at the <em>Sacred Journeys<\/em> exhibit at The Children&#8217;s Museum in Indianapolis last year, we asked Williams (chair of the exhibit&#8217;s advisory board and an\u00a0expert in Swaminarayan Hinduism) to tell\u00a0us about his world travels. Standing by a map\u00a0in the museum, he showed us the places\u00a0he had been, some of the people he had met, how those travels had so enriched the life of a man who grew up in a small town in West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of something he had told me years\u00a0ago when I had asked him what\u00a0had drawn him to study in (and return often) to India.\u00a0He\u00a0told me about the lotus, the national flower of India:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The petals of the lotus flower are beautiful, but it emerges from the mirkiest, dirtiest water there is. The lotus transforms that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People who visit India either become enamored of the flower, or repulsed but the water.
