As we remember and celebrate the life of Bob Allen \u201957, listen to this October 2015\u00a0interview of\u00a0Bob and Betty as they recall their first year of marriage in Mud Hollow, the leftover Quonset hut-style structures built during World War II that served as married student and faculty housing in the 1950s.<\/p>\n
The Allens\u2019 first son, Jay \u201979,\u00a0was born in Mud Hollow, and the residential community forged there left a lasting impression on the Allens.<\/p>\n
During the podcast, Betty H\u201957 and Bob \u201957 take\u00a0turns reflecting on DePauw (Betty\u2019s alma mater), Wabash (Bob\u2019s), their first year as a married couple in\u00a0Mud Hollow, their life together as Bob rose through the ranks at AT&T, and their children.<\/p>\n
At one point Wabash On My Mind host Rich Paige asks the couple for the secret to a long, loving marriage, but you\u00a0can hear it most clearly in the tone of their voices, the way they talk to each other.<\/p>\n
Bob was especially moved this day, as Betty was being named an honorary alumna of Wabash.<\/p>\n
Toward the end of the conversation, Betty recalls an essay she\u2019d been assigned when she was a girl; she had been asked to write down her life goals.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve saved it, and I re-read it just recently,\u201d she says. \u201cI wrote, \u2018I want to be a well-educated mother and wife.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s been a perfect mother,\u201d Bob says, describing\u00a0with gratitude the loving home she had created for him and for their children.<\/p>\n
