{"id":2303,"date":"2016-04-15T14:55:53","date_gmt":"2016-04-15T14:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/?p=2303"},"modified":"2023-05-24T17:56:47","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T17:56:47","slug":"jay-63-climate-change-one-of-the-grandest-challenges-in-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/2016\/04\/15\/jay-63-climate-change-one-of-the-grandest-challenges-in-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Jay \u201963: Climate Change &#8220;One of the Grandest Challenges in History&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Wabash doctor who waged a long and ultimately successful battle against smoking sees global climate change as an exponentially greater threat to global\u00a0public health.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Wednesday in Baxter Hall during the College\u2019s observance of Earth Week, Dr. Stephen Jay \u201963\u2014 who is\u00a0Professor of Health Policy and Management at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis and in 2010 received a lifetime achievement award from the Indiana Public Health Foundation\u2014called climate change \u201cone of the grand challenges in the history of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He quoted World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan:\u00a0\u201cFor public health,\u00a0climate change is the defining issue for the 21st century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He called the science on climate change \u201creally, really, compelling\u201d and noted disturbing similarities between the \u201cdoubt propaganda\u201d put forth by tobacco manufacturers in the1960s and the tactics of nay-sayers on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Evidence of global climate change is all around us,\u201d said Jay, who recently helped lead the data-driven effort to shut down a coal-burning power plant in Indianapolis due to its impact on the health of residents in the area.\u00a0\u201cMy wife and I were\u00a0recently riding our bikes in the Everglades, and we saw firsthand evidence of climate change. We saw water running across trails that had previously been dry forever. We\u2019re seeing the tremendous intrusion of saltwater into the ecosystems in South Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans are already suffering from the impacts of climate change. In \u00a0the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska, you find people struggling to\u00a0survive on what remains of their island being engulfed by that sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Mississippi the Isle de Jean Charles band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw people have become America\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/04\/08\/opinions\/sutter-isle-de-jean-charles-louisiana-climate\/?iid=ob_homepage_tech_pool\"> first official refugees of climate change,<\/a> granted $48 million to re-settle on higher ground after their homeland was increasingly submerged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c6,000 miles from there\u00a0in the Middle East a sustained drought is partially responsible for the\u00a0mass migration of people\u00a0from that region to Europe,\u201d said Jay. \u201cClimate change has been called a\u00a0&#8216;threat multiplier.&#8217; Everything else being equal, climate change is responsible for the\u00a0destabilization of groups of people, and that spells problems for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He quoted \u201c[Washington Governor] Jay Inslee: \u201cThe first\u00a0generations to feel the sting of global warming and climate change are the last who can do something about it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the first generation to fully understand the implications of what\u2019s happening,&#8221; Jay said. \u201cAnd we are, according to the best and brightest of 70,000 climate scientists worldwide, the last generation that can do something about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say to the next generation\u2014we have not given you a fair hand\u2014we need new thinking,\u201d Jay told students and faculty. \u201cMy hope for this presentation is that you would move from some knowledge to action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Jay\u2019s talk was co-sponsored by the College\u2019s Environmental Concerns Committee and the Global Health Initiative.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Wabash doctor who waged a long and ultimately successful battle against smoking sees global climate change as an exponentially greater threat to global\u00a0public health.
