{"id":1365,"date":"2015-10-14T18:28:27","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T18:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/?p=1365"},"modified":"2023-05-24T17:56:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T17:56:49","slug":"the-power-of-young-mens-voices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/magazine\/2015\/10\/14\/the-power-of-young-mens-voices\/","title":{"rendered":"Power in Young Men&#8217;s Voices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>National Public Radio<\/em> journalist Alex Blumberg says \u201cthe greatest power of audio is its honesty,\u201d and that strength is on full display in the voices of these four Wabash freshman.<\/p>\n<p>At end of their month-long stay on campus in July as participants in the Wabash Liberal Arts Immersion Program, students recorded their thoughts about the experience. We\u2019ve compiled excerpts from four of those audio essays here.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle McAtee, Jaleel Grandberry, Myron Howard, and Myles Johnson share their fears, their frustration with education, and the moments during the summer that encouraged them to embrace \u201cbeing intellectual\u201d while discovering writing as a means of liberating self-expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuite honestly, I didn\u2019t think I had what it took to do anything at Wabash College,\u201d McAtee begins, then quotes from one of the essays he read over the summer: \u201cBut I was practicing being an intellectual before I knew that\u2019s what I could be, or wanted to be.<\/p>\n<p>Jaleel Granberry recalls \u201cthe most influential line for me becoming a student,\u201d while Johnson admits his fear of writing, and the moment that fear went away.<\/p>\n<p>For Howard, writing is transformed from \u201cjust another English class\u201d to \u201ca way of expressing who I am as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recordings capture the essence of the young men\u2019s expression in ways the written word cannot.
