{"id":964,"date":"2015-10-16T01:51:02","date_gmt":"2015-10-16T01:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning201314\/?p=964"},"modified":"2015-10-16T01:51:02","modified_gmt":"2015-10-16T01:51:02","slug":"the-incredible-mr-gates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/2015\/10\/16\/the-incredible-mr-gates\/","title":{"rendered":"The Incredible Mr. Gates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Nick Etter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tour of the Archives and Collection Department was interesting to say the least.\u00a0 Head Librarian Bill Gates was able to pull five different artifacts from the Archives to display for us.\u00a0 The first of the artifacts was a small handbook, called the bylaws, from one of the original baseball clubs.\u00a0 Mr. Gates informed us that each baseball club had its own set of rules, and when a game was declared, a rule committee had to decide on <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning201314\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/A-Muffin.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-965\" alt=\"A Muffin\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning201314\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/A-Muffin-300x198.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/A-Muffin-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/A-Muffin-1024x678.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>a set of rules.\u00a0 Originating from the \u201cbaseball club\u201d thought, he went on to explain that each club welcomed all players because each player had to pay dues to play.\u00a0 As more players joined, the whole set of members would not be able to play in a single game. \u00a0This led to the development of the \u201cMuffin\u201d team.\u00a0 The Muffins would play a second game, after the starters, to allow all paying members playing time.\u00a0 The term \u201cmuffing\u201d a ground-ball, or \u201cmuffed it\u201d comes from baseball\u2019s muffin team.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The second artifact was an original check from the New York Yankees to the Boston Red Sox for the transaction of Babe Ruth.\u00a0 The check is one of four payments that the Yankees made to the Red Sox.\u00a0 Only two of the four checks are remaining today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We also were privileged to see the 1947 National League, hand-kept stat book.\u00a0 The 6-inch-thick ledger held all he hand tallied statistics from every National League team in 1947. \u00a0He also told us that if any statistic had been miscalculated, every change had to be tallied up, and reassigned to the rightful stat-holder.\u00a0 The example he explained was for every RBI that didn\u2019t count for one person, in order to add it back to him, it had to be taken away from someone else. \u00a0Mr. Gates also pulled the hand drawn spray charts from Craig Biggio, 2015 Hall of Fame inductee.\u00a0 Before the computer age, hand draw, color coded spray charts for each player were documented by managers after each game.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Nick Etter &nbsp;
