{"id":234,"date":"2013-05-09T18:47:09","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T18:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning_2013-2014\/?p=234"},"modified":"2013-05-09T18:47:09","modified_gmt":"2013-05-09T18:47:09","slug":"exploring-different-class-schedules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/2013\/05\/09\/exploring-different-class-schedules\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Different Class Schedules"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><em>JT Miller &#8217;14<\/em> &#8211;<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"> So today marks the halfway point of our experience in downtown Chicago.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">We have spent three days in our classrooms, and have been exposed to a number of new things, not only during the school day.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Today was a half day at Benito Juarez Community Academy.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Each class period was 23 minutes long, and they skipped home room.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">The overall theme of the today was that it was a \u201cBenchmark Recovery\u201d day.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Now let me explain what that means. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Juarez utilizes a unique system that they call the Benchmark System.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">In the math department they are supposed to cover a total of 40 benchmarks split up among the 4 quarters.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">A benchmark is an academic skill that the students need to learn by the end of the year.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">A few examples from geometry include being able to calculate area and perimeter, and being able to identify angles, circles, and lines. These are all basic standards that you would expect to find in every high school geometry class.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">This is where the system becomes unique.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">Each student is assessed in every benchmark. These assessments are short, one page test containing 3-6 problems.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">However, the students must show proficiency in each benchmark <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">twice<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">If they fail the assessment, then they have the ability to retake a different version of it at some point later in the year.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">They have until the end of the year to show proficiency in each benchmark.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">The school used the shortened class periods today to provide students with the chance to make up the benchmarks that they had failed.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">However, I don\u2019t feel like all of the students took advantage of this opportunity.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">In each of the 4 classes I was in, at most 5 of the 25 students made an attempt to improve a previous benchmark.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: medium\">This is a much different system than I have ever experienced in a high school, and I am looking forward to seeing it in action more later this week. <\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JT Miller &#8217;14 &#8211; So today marks the halfway point of our experience in downtown Chicago.\u00a0 We have spent three days in our classrooms, and have been exposed to a number of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-234","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"w_featured_image_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=234"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=234"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=234"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/immersionlearning\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=234"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
