{"id":678,"date":"2010-12-02T10:12:11","date_gmt":"2010-12-02T15:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/fyi\/?p=678"},"modified":"2010-12-02T10:12:11","modified_gmt":"2010-12-02T15:12:11","slug":"678","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2010\/12\/02\/678\/","title":{"rendered":"Veteran Sports Writer Visits Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><em>Tom Bambrey \u201968 <\/em>&#8211; Last summer, when I assigned \u201cHeaven Is A Playground\u201d as one of the books for my Freshman Tutorial, American Values and American Sports, I had no idea what would happen soon after.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-679\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander325.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-679\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander325.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander325.jpg 325w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander325-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The students presented Telander with a Wabash sweatshirt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The book, published in 1975, tells the story of urban, playground basketball in New Your City, and introduces a group of playground legends &#8211; some of whom were playing college and professional basketball, some of whom would never escape their urban circumstances.\u00a0 Written by Rick Telander, then a young sportswriter who spent a summer in Brooklyn researching the book and learning about the importance of basketball to urban youth, \u201cHeaven Is A Playground\u201d has been recognized by <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em> as one of the great sports books of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Telander is the senior sports columnist for the <em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>, a former Senior Writer at <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em>, and multiple winner of the Illinois Sportswriter of the Year Award. He has also written eight books.\u00a0 He is also widely known for his television appearances and his perceptive writing about sports.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_680\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-680\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander375.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-680\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander375.jpg 375w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/Tellander375-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The students organize for a group photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through a series of events, Telander learned that his book was part of the Wabash College tutorial.\u00a0 Telander offered to drive down from Chicago to meet with the class.\u00a0 Wednesday evening, he met with the group, explaining how he wrote \u201cHeaven Is a Playground.\u201d He shared old photos and his original notebooks from his summer in Brooklyn. Answering questions from the class, Rick gave the eager freshmen a first-person account of what it is like to be a writer, what it was like for a 24 year old to walk into street basketball and learn about the players and their culture, and how he has maintained those friendships over the years.\u00a0\u00a0 He also shared his ideas about how to enjoy life and strive for success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The final moment of the evening came when Rick noticed one of the students wearing a Beta Theta Pi pledge pin. Telander, a member of Beta Theta Pi at Northwestern University, began discussing the Beta house at Wabash.
