It\u2019s that lasting and continuous impact that earned Warner the Wabash Club of Indianapolis Man-of-the-Year award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wabash.edu\/photo-albums\/album\/6158\">Leadership Breakfast<\/a> on Feb. 26.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m humbled and I\u2019m still shocked because we\u2019re all people of the year, right?\u201d Warner asked. \u00a0\u201cI feel so much a part of this community and I\u2019m glad that after 27 years, it\u2019s worked out this well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been an honorary member of the Sphinx Club, a faculty advisor to sh\u2019OUT, the Independent Men\u2019s Association, Phi Delta Theta, Unidos Por Sangre, and now, La Alianza. Further, he served as an associate dean in the dean of students office and he\u2019s supported the Montgomery County Free Clinic.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As a teacher, the former chef turned professor leaned into what he knew and used food as an entry point for study. Often cooking in a professional-grade kitchen in his own home, he\u2019s used that as a laboratory for questions and further study on Latin American, African, and world history under the guise of food. That doesn\u2019t include the muffins, soups, or ice creams that often made their way to campus meetings and lunchtime talks. With Warner, food is always an entry point to an extended conversation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3836\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3836 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/03\/Warner_4755.jpg\" alt=\"Rick Warner, associate professor of history\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warner poses with his Wabash Club of Indianapolis Man of the Year award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He brought Big History to campus, the integrated approach to the subject that links it to other disciplines, and expanded horizons across campus by leading many immersion trips to locations in Mexico like Chiapas and Mexico City, as well as Kenya, Panama, and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Following the breakfast presentation, Warner reflected on his nearly three decades in Crawfordsville.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stars aligned and I started working at Wabash,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve just adored it ever since I got here. I became an anthropologist to the place and learned as much as I could. I\u2019m glad that I\u2019ve had multiple careers and multiple pathways. We\u2019re all just dudes trying to figure it out together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether student or professor, one always hopes the fit is good when someone chooses Wabash.
