While each resided in vastly different locations, they returned to campus with a similar thought: the connections made through cultures, people, and experiences made for a rich experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe education, trips, and, most importantly, the different cultures to which I was exposed made this experience very enlightening and eye-opening,\u201d said Rodolfo Solis \u201918, who was based in Valencia, Spain. \u201cAs a result, this led me to appreciate the Spanish language and literature much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of that appreciation can be seen in the interactions with people, whether it be host families or strangers met while traveling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2936\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Gilman_Rivers2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2936\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Gilman_Rivers2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dominick Rivers at the Great Pyramids of Giza.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While on a trip to Cairo, Egypt, Dominick Rivers \u201919 was on a run at the Great Pyramids of Giza, when he befriended a watchman named Nasar, who took him to parts of the site not available to the general public. From there, Rivers shared a dinner with his family, viewed Nasar\u2019s artwork \u2013 a sculptor \u2013 and meditated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was truly a fantastic experience that affirmed an already held belief,\u201d said Rivers, who was based in Prague, Czech Republic. \u201cAs humans, we are in this together just to make life that much easier and enjoyable for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Solis was moved during a visit to Pe\u00f1iscola, Spain. The town holds a noteworthy castle that dates back to the Crusades, and was recently featured prominently on HBO\u2019s Game of Thrones. Such a journey was like a trip through time, according to Solis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to do something that I never thought was possible, set foot in a historical monument previously used for an event that took place a little over 900 years ago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Immanuel Mitchell-Sodipe \u201918 spoke of shared experiences with his host family while in Guatemala. He remembered conversations with his host mother, Rubi, and connections made when discussing the issues that affect the poor and underrepresented.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2935\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Gilman_Imm_Guatemala.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2935\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Gilman_Imm_Guatemala.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Immanuel Mitchell-Sodipe\u00a0 snaps a photo in Guatemala.discussing the issues that affect the poor and underrepresented.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe world seems smaller, like people share my politics and experiences,\u201d he said \u201cPeople love, and they imagine a better world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two of Wabash\u2019s Gilman Scholarship recipients had traveled outside the United States previously. For Rivers, it was his first trip abroad, and he appreciated the familiarity he discovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere might be a lot of land and sea that separates us, but deep down we are all looking for the same thing \u2013 to enjoy the time we have and to make it last,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Wabash students spent last semester abroad as part of the Gilman International Scholarship program.
