{"id":2833,"date":"2016-09-30T14:04:36","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T14:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/?p=2833"},"modified":"2016-10-03T16:03:22","modified_gmt":"2016-10-03T16:03:22","slug":"a-story-a-stage-a-starring-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2016\/09\/30\/a-story-a-stage-a-starring-role\/","title":{"rendered":"A Story, a Stage, a Starring Role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Paige &#8212;<\/em> Sometimes, it\u2019s just meant to be, and so it was with the upcoming production of <em>Peter and the Starcatcher<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Wabash College is the first collegiate theater company in Indiana to produce the show on campus. The rights for the play that won five Tony Awards came open this year, and Assistant Professor of Theater Jessie Mills acted fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had my eye on it for a while so we scooped it up when we had the chance,\u201d she said. \u201cNeedless to say, I thought it would be a lot of fun for our students and a big change of pace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2842\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2842\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/09\/Rory-Sits-under-Cast.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2842\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2842\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/09\/Rory-Sits-under-Cast-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"Rory Willats '17 during a recent dress rehearsal.\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/09\/Rory-Sits-under-Cast-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/09\/Rory-Sits-under-Cast.jpg 305w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2842\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rory Willats &#8217;17 during a recent dress rehearsal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As it turns out, Mills also had someone in mind to play the boy who never grew up, one best suited to handle the ragged and chaotic style that has become this musical play\u2019s calling card.<\/p>\n<p>Rory Willats \u201917 is just that guy. He is no stranger to the Wabash stage, having occupied supporting roles in more than a handful of Wabash productions, but <em>Peter and the Starcatcher<\/em> will be his first leading role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really think this is a role perfectly suited to me,\u201d Willats said, \u201cwhich is not to say that this process is a walk in the park by any means. Because it&#8217;s a high-energy, physical show and because there are parts of the boy I can see in myself, it isn\u2019t at all easy for me. It&#8217;s also the first time in my career that I&#8217;m able to wrestle with a role in a show like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The curtain rises on <em>Peter and the Starcatcher<\/em> on Oct. 5, and Mills is confident that Rory will inject something new into the prequel of <em>Peter Pan<\/em>, a story which nearly everyone is familiar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is perfect in the role of Peter \u2013 a character who is as boyish and optimistic as he is frightened and vulnerable,\u201d said Mills.\u00a0\u201cRory has done a wonderful job pulling out the depth of complexities in Peter.
