{"id":2677,"date":"2015-11-03T15:44:47","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T15:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/?p=2677"},"modified":"2015-11-03T15:44:47","modified_gmt":"2015-11-03T15:44:47","slug":"medieval-history-made-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2015\/11\/03\/medieval-history-made-fun\/","title":{"rendered":"Medieval History Made Fun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Richard Paige<\/em> &#8212; If only every idea that crossed your desk could be as whimsical.<\/p>\n<p>Professor of History Stephen Morillo got an out-of-the-blue e-mail from a high school student named Greyson Beights, who asked if Morillo could write a 200-word description of the Battle of Hastings.<\/p>\n<p>That whimsy eventually became <em>Medieval Lego<\/em>, a book that pairs real historians\u2019 summaries of events like the Battle of Hastings, the chartering of Oxford University, and the signing of the Magna Carta with Lego bricks.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think there could there be a better way to make any subject appealing to children than to mix in Lego constructions.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_2683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2683\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/10\/Lego_1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/10\/Lego_1.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Morillo&#039;s contributions inside Medieval Lego.\" width=\"295\" height=\"267\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2683\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Morillo&#8217;s contributions can be found inside Medieval Lego.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\u201cIt\u2019s an interesting, almost noble thought to make Medieval history interesting to kids by building Lego set pieces of famous battles or sieges,\u201d Morillo said. \u201cGreyson did it right. He got good builders and made good Lego constructions. He made it reliable and respectable by getting in touch with some big-name Medieval historians like Robert Bartlett and Steven Isaac.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two-hundred words on the Battle of Hastings. Would he do it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking I could do that in my sleep,\u201d said Morillo. \u201cSure, I\u2019ll take part. So I sent him my stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some 15 months later, a copy of <em>Medieval Lego<\/em> arrived in Morillo\u2019s office. The finished product was impressive. Plus, the Battle of Hastings landed on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a damn good idea,\u201d Morillo said. \u201cHe makes some real connections here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked Morillo if this particular publication would leap to the top of his C.V. \u201cYes, I think it will,\u201d he laughed. \u201cIt\u2019s the most recent thing, so, of course, it goes right to the top.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Paige &#8212; If only every idea that crossed your desk could be as whimsical.
