{"id":226,"date":"2008-03-28T10:18:43","date_gmt":"2008-03-28T10:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2008\/03\/28\/lake-encourages-non-conformity\/"},"modified":"2008-03-28T10:18:43","modified_gmt":"2008-03-28T10:18:43","slug":"lake-encourages-non-conformity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2008\/03\/28\/lake-encourages-non-conformity\/","title":{"rendered":"Lake Encourages Non-conformity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/www2images\/LakeChapel.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Dr. Timothy Lake, Director of the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies delivered his Chapel Talk Thursday titled \u201cDie Niggers: the High Price of a Wabash Education.\u201d Click <a href=\"http:\/\/caleb.wabash.edu\/podcast\/Chapel\/2008_3_27_Lake.mp3\">here<\/a> to listen to the podcast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In his talk he spoke of many men and women in Wabash College\u2019s past who are continuing to \u201cbear fruit even as we approach the end of the first decade of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lake quoted a speech given by Dean Shearer to the graduating seniors in 1969 in which he said, \u201cWabash College must not take a position partisan at all when it comes to matters of social import. Instead it must seek to make room for the various and varying points of view. To pursue their dreams, those people from different backgrounds and those people with different aspirations should find home here at Wabash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lake continued, \u201cNon-conformity, in Shearer\u2019s definition, meant having those people in your midst who you absolutely disagree with \u2013 <em>that\u2019s<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal\"> diversity \u2013 made real because it expand us, it\u2020 challenges us to push beyond the niceties of tolerance, forbearance, and exceptance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In reference to a recent racial incident on campus, Lake spoke to the two victims pledging his support for the men regardless of whether they choose to remain at Wabash.
