{"id":2219,"date":"2005-09-28T11:31:44","date_gmt":"2005-09-28T11:31:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2005\/09\/28\/a-journalist-living-humanely\/"},"modified":"2005-09-28T11:31:44","modified_gmt":"2005-09-28T11:31:44","slug":"a-journalist-living-humanely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/2005\/09\/28\/a-journalist-living-humanely\/","title":{"rendered":"A journalist living humanely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'\">Steve Charles\u2014TIME<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'\">magazine Miami Bureau Chief Tim Padgett \u201984 travels to New York next month to receive the Cabot Prize from Columbia University for his outstanding reporting on Latin America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\" class=\"msonormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'\">But I&#8217;ve learned much and been moved by his recent coverage of the devastation caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the Gulf Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\" style=\"line-height: 150%\" class=\"msonormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/www2images\/padgett.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'\">Some of his best work is found at <i>TIME Online.<\/i> His &quot;Flying with a New Orleans Rescue Crew&quot; snatches you up for a ride on a CH-53 helicopter called &quot;Voodoo Child&quot; as it takes to a sky &quot;frenetically<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'\">dotted with all types and sizes of choppers, bobbing and weaving like bumblebees in a barely controlled chaos amidst the smoke of fires burning along the Mississippi River below.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\" class=\"msonormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif'\">Padgett&#8217;s reporting illuminates challenges I&#8217;d never heard about in other coverage, such as the difficulty of providing air traffic control during the &quot;saturation rescue scene&quot; over New Orleans, and then takes you face to face with physically and mentally disabled survivors the crew plucks from the floodwaters. The final paragraph is as carefully observed as the best fiction, but this is reality at its most desperate.
