And [Wabash Professor of Modern Languages ] Greg [Redding] and I were the first to see the book\u2014maybe even before Brian\u2014at MLA in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very proud of the book, but we\u2019re even more proud of <a href=\"https:\/\/wabash.edu\/academics\/profiles\/home.cfm?site_folder=modern_languages&amp;facname=tuckerb\">Professor Tucker<\/a>, who is a tremendous asset to this department and the College.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/10\/book721.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1100\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/10\/book721.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucknell.edu\/script\/upress\/book.asp?id=474\">Reading Riddles: Rhetorics of Obscurity from Romanticism to Freud<\/a>,<\/em> was published earlier this year by the Bucknell University Press. \u201cThis book is about how the theory of literature in early German romanticism lays the groundwork for Sigmund Freud\u2019s approach to the psyche,\u201d Tucker writes in the book\u2019s introduction. \u201cMore specifically, it shows how the riddle emerges in romanticism as a key figure for a mode of writing that privileges obscurity, difficulty, and interrupted communication, and how this figure in turn provides a model for Freud\u2019s interpretive practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe research that went into the book also serves as the background for much of my teaching in literature and intellectual history,\u201d Tucker \u201998 said. \u201csometimes offer a seminar on &#8220;Freud and the Question of Interpretation,&#8221; which introduces Wabash students to many of the issues that I explore in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Pat White and Dean of the College Gary Phillips were among the scores of faculty who stopped by to offer their congratulations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1101\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1101\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/10\/cakebest721.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1101 \" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/10\/cakebest721-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/10\/cakebest721-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/fyi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/10\/cakebest721.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After all his hard work, the publication of the &quot;Reading Riddles&quot; was icing on the cake for Professor Tucker.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444\">\u201cIt&#8217;s wonderful to have so many people come to the reception,\u201d Tucker said. \u201cResearch and writing often feel like solitary, isolating endeavors, so it&#8217;s nice to celebrate the fruits of that labor with friends and colleagues. It&#8217;s especially flattering when you think about how many of those colleagues are working on their own important books, exhibits, and creative projects.<\/span>\u201cThe book represents the culmination of many years of work and allows me to embark in earnest on the next chapter in my career.
