It is an\u00a0\u00a0important painting and the oldest in the Elston Homestead.\u00a0This is one of two known paintings of this particular work by Nicolaes Maes. The other painting is located in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>Maes is Dutch Baroque painter who lived from 1634-1693. Maes was a student of\u00a0Rembrandt, and his early\u00a0paintings reflect the master&#8217;s\u00a0style. Maes&#8217; genre paintings were influential to many later painters, including Vermeer.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0painting depicts an old woman spinning wool in the corner of a room.
