He lived in Petite Andeley, only an hour\u2019s drive from Claude Monet\u2019s home and studio in Giverny. He would visit Monet, who had a profound and lasting influence on the young Patterson. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monet owned a vast collection of Japanese prints and illustrations, which influenced his own impressionist style, and inspired Patterson\u2019s illustrations, with elongated proportions, strong contour lines, and essential details. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-237\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/elstoncollection\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2016\/05\/Screen-Shot-2016-05-05-at-10.26.51-PM-222x300.png\" alt=\"Patterson \" width=\"275\" height=\"367\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This drawing by Patterson illustrates these principles in action, illustrating a sexual a woman in the center contrasted next to the two very simple male characters in the back.
