an achievement which no team would repeat for twenty-four years.\u00a0 The win was no fluke, no miracle\u2026 (Coach) Cayou\u2019s boys demonstrated The Chief\u2019s oft-repeated statement that \u2018a real will to win cannot be denied.\u2019 Besides the glory of having beaten Notre Dame on its home field (an achieve\u00adment highly regarded by all opponents before and since) Cayou&#8217;s Little Giants had another distinction.\u00a0 If that was not the first football game to be broadcast in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">Indiana<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\"> with visual effects to an absent audience, then some authority should come for\u00adward with irrefutable evidence to prove otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 1in 0.0001pt 0.25in\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Due to a normal lack of funds among students, and of time among employed citizens, not everyone who wished to do so could make the trip to So<span style=\"font-size: smaller\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">uth Bend<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small\">.\u00a0 So some great mind, or some concert of great minds, went into action.\u00a0 A cable was strung across a Crawfordsville street, from the top of the Traction Terminal to a similar height on a building opposite.\u00a0 The cable was marked off to represent the yard lines on a football field, scaled down to fit the space.\u00a0 A football, or a symbolic representation of one, was at\u00adtached to a light trolley running on the cable and lines were extended from it to handlers at the opposite ends.\u00a0 The trac\u00adtion electric railway system had a free telephone line running to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">South Bend<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">, and a local line was run from there to the Notre Dame field, where a spectator was prepared to give a play-by-play report of the game.\u00a0 His comments were re\u00adbroadcast by megaphone off the Traction Terminal roof in Crawfordsville, and those handling the lines moved the football back and forth to follow the action \u00adof which there was plenty, including not only the Wabash winning touchdown but a successful second-half stand by Cayou&#8217;s boys on their own one-foot line.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<address><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Beth Swift<\/span><\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Archivist<\/span><\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Wabash College<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/address>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Article by Dick Banta (W1926) In 1905 Wa\u00adbash beat Notre Dame on the University&#8217;s home field &#8211;
