One student suggested heliotrope and another replied, \u201cHeliotrope, hell! We want blood!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This Indiana championship team was the first to wear the scarlet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1484\" alt=\"FirstRibbon1886\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886-300x243.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this is a scrap of the first scarlet ever worn!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886CLoseup.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1485\" alt=\"FirstRibbon1886CLoseup\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886CLoseup.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886CLoseup.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/FirstRibbon1886CLoseup-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the start of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century football fever gripped the nation and colleges began hosting homecoming weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Driven by the Chicago Alumni Association, Wabash\u2019s first homecoming football weekend was in 1912.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/1912-09-28-p1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1486\" alt=\"1912 09 28 p1\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/1912-09-28-p1.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"1213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/1912-09-28-p1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/09\/1912-09-28-p1-422x1024.jpg 422w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Roaring twenties saw Homecoming firmly established. House decorations, stunt night, bonfires, dances and chapel sing all came into being at that time.\u00a0 Homecoming as we know it was here to stay. The Sphinx Club came in the 20\u2019s too. In December of 1921 a group from Wabash travelled to IU and brought back the Sphinx. The club quickly assumed many duties at Homecoming, as they still do today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/Old-wabashLO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-702\" alt=\"Old wabashLO\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/Old-wabashLO.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/Old-wabashLO.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/Old-wabashLO-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chapel Sing, known in the past as Freshman Sing, was more of an individual ordeal as it was every man for himself. Note too in this picture of the 1930s that the freshmen are all wearing their &#8220;pots&#8221; or beanies. All the freshmen are being closely watched by the members of the Senior Council who served as judges for the sing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/freshman-fireLO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-701\" alt=\"freshman fireLO\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/freshman-fireLO.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/freshman-fireLO.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/dearoldwabash\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2011\/09\/freshman-fireLO-167x300.jpg 167w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The homecoming bonfire was a big deal and the gathering of the materials for the fire sometimes led to trouble with our neighbors.
