McClendon &#039;88 wins Emmy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Chicago) Talk show host and\u00a0<strong>Wabash College<\/strong>\u00a0graduate,\u00a0<strong>Garrard McClendon (&#8217;88)<\/strong>, won a\u00a0Chicago <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/files\/2011\/11\/garrard-mcclendon-wabash-file.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3874\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/files\/2011\/11\/garrard-mcclendon-wabash-file-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2011\/11\/garrard-mcclendon-wabash-file-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2011\/11\/garrard-mcclendon-wabash-file.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Emmy\u00a0at the\u00a053rd Annual Chicago\/Midwest Emmy Awards\u00a0hosted by the\u00a0National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. His Emmy was in the category for &#8220;Outstanding Achievement for Interview\/Discussion Programming, awarded to a producer\/host\/reporter.\u00a0McClendon and producer,\u00a0<strong>Allison Hunter<\/strong>, won for their program,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The Challenge of Raising African American Boys&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0airing on WYCC. He currently teaches at Chicago State University.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event was at the Alhambra Palace, the Moroccan-themed venue and dining space at 1240 W. Randolph.<\/p>\n<p>It was in January when McClendon launched his new show\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Off 63rd,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0debuting live on Chicago&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>PBS<\/strong>\u00a0affiliate<strong>WYCC TV-20<\/strong>. The 30-minute show, focusing on public affairs and featuring guests from the worlds of politics, pop culture, current affairs and education, aired on Thursdays<\/p>\n<p>McClendon, a resident of Chicago&#8217;s South Side, also recently earned a Ph.D. in education from\u00a0Loyola University.<\/p>\n<p>His parents,\u00a0Ruby\u00a0and\u00a0Milton McClendon\u00a0of Hammond, were murdered in 2009 and two teens were arrested and charged with the crimes before pleading guilty in October 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Late last year, Garrard and brothers, Theodore and\u00a0Duane,\u00a0announced the establishment of\u00a0The Milton and Ruby McClendon Education Fund\u00a0to provide educational materials to schools in Hammond.<\/p>\n<p>McClendon has hosted\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Garrard McClendon Live&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>CLTV<\/strong>, The McClendon Report on\u00a0<strong>WVON-1690 AM<\/strong>, and commentary for\u00a0<strong>WTTW-Channel 11<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Chicago Tonight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McClendon is also the author of the book, &#8220;Ax or Ask?: The African-American Guide to Better English.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Press release from<\/em><br \/>\n<em>WYCC PBS Chicago<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo from Wabash files<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Chicago) Talk show host and\u00a0Wabash College\u00a0graduate,\u00a0Garrard McClendon (&#8217;88), won a\u00a0Chicago Emmy\u00a0at the\u00a053rd Annual Chicago\/Midwest Emmy Awards\u00a0hosted by the\u00a0National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
