{"id":2076,"date":"2011-03-10T07:29:49","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T12:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/?p=2076"},"modified":"2011-03-10T07:29:49","modified_gmt":"2011-03-10T12:29:49","slug":"proud-on-so-many-levels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/2011\/03\/10\/proud-on-so-many-levels\/","title":{"rendered":"Proud On So Many Levels"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2077\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/files\/2011\/03\/ashraf-1-8829.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2077\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/files\/2011\/03\/ashraf-1-8829.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2011\/03\/ashraf-1-8829.jpg 540w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2011\/03\/ashraf-1-8829-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ashraf Haidari &#039;01<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ashraf Haidari &#8217;01 graduated from Wabash in a completely different world. \u00a0We all know how much that world changed on September 11th &#8211; less than four months after his Commencement.<\/p>\n<p>Since those days, Ashraf has begun raising a family, achieved an advanced degree, and become a leading statesman for his country &#8211; Afghanistan. \u00a0Yes, statesman is the right word &#8211; the challenges they face are astronomically large but he was the talents, and the will, to move those mountains.<\/p>\n<p>He talked on March 3, 2011 to a packed International Hall about his homeland and the challenges the Afghans face. \u00a0Not woe is me. \u00a0Not we want America out. \u00a0Nothing like that. \u00a0A very calm and straightforward review of where they have been, where they are, and what the future holds. \u00a0I can not even begin to tell you how much I admire Ashraf and how proud I am of him.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2078\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2078\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/files\/2011\/03\/pakistan-8847.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2078\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.wabash.edu\/alumni\/files\/2011\/03\/pakistan-8847.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2011\/03\/pakistan-8847.jpg 540w, https:\/\/blog.wabash.edu\/alumninews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2011\/03\/pakistan-8847-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wabash Student From Pakistan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the presentation, one student, shown in the picture, brought up the challenges in that part of the world from his homeland&#8217;s perspective. \u00a0This young man is from Pakistan and, as you can imagine, has a different view of the impact of terrorism in that area, especially when it comes to which countries are doing enough and which ones aren&#8217;t. \u00a0Did he disagree with some of what Ashraf had to say? \u00a0Yes. \u00a0Did they discuss it like true gentlemen? \u00a0Yes, indeed. \u00a0I was proud of them both.<\/p>\n<p>A Wabash without an Ashraf Hadari and this intelligent young man from Pakistan would be a lesser place.<\/p>\n<p>As an &#8220;Oh by the way&#8221;, I was seated at a table with a young man from Crawfordsville who is now a Wabash student. \u00a0As a &#8220;townie&#8221; myself, I ask him what made him come to Wabash. \u00a0&#8220;Ashraf Haidari&#8221;, he said. \u00a0Ashraf worked in the college bookstore and took the young man under his wing when he was a boy of 8. \u00a0Think about that course of events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ashraf Haidari &#8217;01 graduated from Wabash in a completely different world. \u00a0We all know how much that world changed on September 11th &#8211; less than four months after his Commencement.
